ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives Despite increasingly meticulous haemovigilance reporting throughout the world, a systematic assessment of cost transfusion reactions is still lacking. This partly caused by fact that such an requires subjective expert additional costs linked to adverse reaction. Data on could support decision‐making regarding blood safety measures. Materials Methods Thirteen experts from nine hospitals were asked estimate care required following various types reactions. Additional was quantified as proportion requiring care, amount (e.g. hospitalization days, physician's time). Experts also provide, per type reaction, preventable. Structured quantitative elicitation methods applied obtain combine estimates. Results The estimated annual in‐hospital in Netherlands €933 356 year (€1.52 transfusion). Two‐thirds (64%) these are incurred non‐serious Circulatory overload, TRALI anaphylaxis clearly dominate serious (66% total); non‐haemolytic incur 46% measures targeting circulatory overload new antibody formation potentially offer highest reduction. Conclusion In‐hospital substantial but contribute less than 1% total Netherlands. A considerable part (24%) might be
