ABSTRACT
To document the appearance of artifacts created by commonly encountered surgical conditions and instrumentation on optical coherence tomography (OCT) to compare these findings with histopathology.Ex vivo study.Five canine cadavers.Skin, subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle, fascia samples were obtained from fresh cadavers. Blood pooling, hemostatic crushing, scalpel blade cut, monopolar electrosurgery, bipolar vessel sealing device, ultrasonic energy induced each tissue type. Each specimen was imaged OCT subsequently histologically processed. Most used for tumor excision a high-scattering region local architectural disruption. pooling visible as layer overlying normal architecture. Only focal, low-scattering area representing sharply demarcated cut within distinct other instrumentation.Common instruments during produced in tissues seen at margins. The clinical value hinges ability personnel interpret this novel imaging recognize artifacts. Defining describing common provides foundation create image libraries known histological interpretation, ultimately improving diagnostic accuracy assessment margins.
