ABSTRACT
Abstract Introduction In addition to an organ donor shortage, racial disparities exist at different stages of the transplantation process. Xenotransplantation (XTx) could alleviate these issues. This study describes differences in attitudes XTx among populations who may need a transplant or are recipients. Methods A Likert‐scale survey was distributed outpatient clinics parents children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and kidney patients on their pig XTx. Data from two groups were stratified by race compared. Results Ninety‐seven CHD (74.2% White 25.8% Black) 148 (50% 50% responded our survey. Black patients’ acceptance although high (70%) lower than (91%; P .003). more likely accept if results similar allotransplantation (OR 4.14; 95% CI 4.51‐11.41), less be concerned psychosocial changes when compared (receiving would change your personality OR 0.08; 0.01‐0.67 social interaction 0.24; 0.07‐0.78). There no CHD. Conclusion particularly patients. Because kidneys first for clinical trials XTx, future studies that decrease scientific mistrust concerns community needed prevent uptake possible alternatives.
