VariableTypography: Artificial Intelligence Augmented Reading Experience

ABSTRACT
Abstract Nowadays, digital information has overloaded and reading time been fragmented due to the significant development of devices, such as phones, computers, etc. Optimizing experience become a challenge. Prior studies on Chinese have primarily focused uniform consistent typography settings. Nevertheless, this standard is not applicable real-world scenarios. Usually, people leverage different typographical variables emphasize part sentence highlight key information. Inspired by this, we propose novel screen method, dubbed VariableTypography (VT), that highlights in various typographic ways utilizes artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT identify text, aiming enhance experience. In field intelligence, progress made natural language processing, resulting innovative tools like ChatGPT. With its low operating threshold ability use for prompt engineering, attracted widespread attention. study, incorporated into scenario integrated it with VT examine potential assisted reading. To evaluate effectiveness VT, objective subjective experiments were conducted naturalistic remote settings 70 participants using their smartphones daily Interlude Reading The results show our proposed effectively improved readers’ acquisition while significantly reducing cognitive load during reading, without affecting original efficiency. Additionally, evidenced good acceptance. We hope findings will shed light readability.
