ABSTRACT
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) has revolutionized the surgical treatment of prostate cancer. This procedure permits complete removal and seminal vesicles while minimizing pain recovery time. However, laparoscopic approach greatly limits surgeon's tactile sensation during procedure. is particularly true with robot-assisted LRP where no feedback available forcing surgeon to rely solely on visual cues. The pathologist perform intraoperative frozen section pathologic analysis a few select tissue fragments, but this time consuming costly. Concrete conclusions based such samples are unreliable as they do not reflect entire margin status. In case conservative might dictate more marginal material than necessary, thereby compromising important nerve-sparing aspects study, we demonstrate feasibility using multi-modal time-gated optical imaging, i.e. time-resolved light reflectance auto-fluorescence life-time imaging performed by an ICCD (Intensified Charge-Coupled Device) system enable clinicians detect positive tumor margins high sensitivity specificity over prostate. Results from animal experiments present potential identifying differences in signals between cancer control tissues. also show that use classification algorithms can identify cancerous regions specificity.
