ABSTRACT
Purpose: Ultrasound (US) is a noninvasive, nonradiographic imaging technique with high spatial and temporal resolution that can be used for localizing soft‐tissue structures tumors in real‐time during radiotherapy (inter‐ intra‐fraction). A detailed methodology integrating 3D‐US within RT presented. This method easier to adopt into current treatment protocol than US based systems reduces user variability image acquisition, thus eliminating transducer induced changes limit CT planning system. Methods: We designed an in‐house integrated manipulator platform relate CT, linear accelerator coordinate systems. To validate the platform, agar‐based phantom measured densities speed‐of‐sound consistent tissues surrounding bladder, was rotated (0–45°) resulting translations (up 55mm) relative After acquiring images system, US‐to‐US US‐to‐CT were co‐registered re‐align accelerator. Errors transformation matrix components calculate determine precision of this under different patient positions. Results: Statistical errors from US‐US registrations orientations ranged 0.06–1.66mm x, y, z translational components, 0.00–1.05° rotational components. US‐CT 0.23–1.18mm y 0.08–2.52° Conclusion: Based on our result, currently techniques positioning prostate patients if couch re‐positioning less 5 degree rotation. are now testing dog obtain both inter intra‐fractional positional errors. Additional design considerations include future use ultrasound‐based functionality (photoacoustics, radioacoustics, Doppler) monitor blood flow hypoxia and/or in‐vivo dosimetry applications other therapeutic techniques, such as hyperthermia, anti‐angiogenesis, particle therapy.
