ABSTRACT
Carbohydrate and caffeine are known to independently improve certain aspects of athletic performance. However, less is understood about physiological performance outcomes when these compounds coingested in a rehydration carbohydrate-replacement strategy. The aim this study was examine the influence adding moderate dose carbohydrate solution during prolonged soccer activity. Fifteen male players performed two 90-min intermittent shuttle-running trials. They ingested carbohydrate-electrolyte (CON) providing total 1.8 g/kg body mass (BM) or similar with added (CAF; 3.7 mg/kg BM). Solutions were 1 hr before exercise every 15 min protocol. Soccer passing skill countermovement-jump height (CMJ) quantified regularly exercise. Sprinting performance, heart rate, blood lactate concentration (La) subjective experiences participants measured routinely. Mean 15-m sprint time faster CAF ( p = .04); over final mean times 2.48 ± 0.15 s vs. CON 2.59 0.2 s. Explosive leg power improved (52.9 5.8 51.7 5.7 cm, .03). Heart rate elevated throughout CAF, ratings pleasure significantly enhanced. There no significant differences skill, rating perceived exertion, La, body-mass losses between addition sprinting countermovement jumping, players. Caffeine appeared offset fatigue-induced decline self-selected components
