ABSTRACT
Atlantification-the northward inflow of anomalous waters and biota from the Atlantic into polar basins-has wide-ranging climatological ramifications. We present previously unknown observational evidence that atlantification processes are strengthening in eastern Eurasian Basin. The primary example is diminishing sea ice, which related to a powerful ocean-heat/ice-albedo feedback, accelerates sea-ice losses. Furthermore, we observe extending far beyond Lomonosov Ridge Makarov Basin Arctic Ocean where upper ocean ventilation creates new unique ecological environment. part Siberian still strongly stratified, but atlantification-driven shoaling warm, salty, nutrient-rich intermediate already has important consequences there. Disentangling role multiple complex high-latitude changes should be priority future modeling efforts.
