ABSTRACT
Resistance to clarithromycin among isolates of Mycobacterium chelonae and M. abscessus was observed in 18 800 (2.3%) patients tested between 1990 1995. Patients whose were resistant had either disseminated disease or chronic lung disease, the recovered after monotherapy. Sequencing gene coding for 23S rRNA peptidyltransferase region revealed a point mutation involving adenine at position 2058 (38%) 2059 (62%) 20 relapse from first 13 identified. By pulsed-field gel electrophoresis random amplified polymorphic DNA PCR, initial shown have identical patterns. found only single chromosomal copy operon, thus making them susceptible single-step mutations. Thus, resistance these species rapidly growing mycobacteria relates occurs limited clinical situations, but identified almost 5%
