ABSTRACT
The immunological control mechanism against cholera toxin (CT) in the small intestine of rats was studied vivo. CT binding to intestinal receptors determined by injected radiolabeled into loops rat and subsequently separating purified microvillus membranes from mucosal scrapings those loops. substantial radioactivity (10(5) cpm/mg protein) present fractions exposed 125I-labeled compared (10(2) cpm/mg) bovine serum albumin (BSA) used as a control. significantly inhibited (P less than 0.02) immunized with crude combined intraperitoneal oral method animals BSA or controls, suggesting specific relationship between antitoxin inhibition binding. Furthermore, ligated ileal CT-immunized showed significant decrease fluid accumulation when BSA-immunized animals, that antitoxins also interfered biological action under conditions immunization. These studies provide direct evidence protect CT-induced diarrhea interfering attachment surface.
