Bat Guano Virome: Predominance of Dietary Viruses from Insects and Plants plus Novel Mammalian Viruses

ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Bats are hosts to a variety of viruses capable zoonotic transmissions. Because increased contact between bats, humans, and other animal species, the possibility exists for further cross-species transmissions ensuing disease outbreaks. We describe here full partial viral genomes identified using metagenomics in guano bats from California Texas. A total 34% 58% 390,000 sequence reads bat Texas, respectively, were related eukaryotic viruses, largest proportion those infect insects, reflecting diet these insectivorous including members families Dicistroviridae , Iflaviridae Tetraviridae Nodaviridae subfamily Densovirinae . The second virus-related sequences infects plants fungi, likely ingested Luteoviridae Secoviridae Tymoviridae Partitiviridae genus Sobemovirus Bat infecting mammals comprised third group, Parvoviridae Circoviridae Picornaviridae Adenoviridae Poxviridae Astroviridae Coronaviridae No close relative known human pathogens was populations. Phylogenetic analysis used clarify relationship taxa novel detected samples, showing that some fall outside existing taxonomic groups. This initial characterization virome, first metagenomic wild second-generation sequencing, therefore showed presence previously unidentified genera, possibly families. Viral is useful tool genetically characterizing present animals with capability direct or indirect zoonosis humans.
