ABSTRACT
The spatiotemporal variation of several carbapenemase-encoding genes (CRGs) was investigated in the influent and effluent municipal WWTPs, with or without hospital sewage input. Correlations among gene abundances, bacterial community composition, wastewater quality parameters were tested to identify possible predictors CRGs presence. Also, role wastewaters mirroring clinical resistance is discussed. taxonomic groups abundances showed an even distribution types, meaning that does not influence microbial diversity CRG pool. composed mainly Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Patescibacteria, Bacteroidetes. Acinetobacter spp. most abundant group had majority operational units (OTUs) positively correlated CRGs. This agrees recent reports on data. samples dominated by blaKPC, as opposed effluent, where blaIMP dominant. frequent family observed correlate taxa, especially Mycobacterium genus samples. Bacterial load, blaNDM, blaOXA-48 BOD5, TSS, HEM, Cr, Cu, Fe concentrations wastewaters. When abundance values converted into population equivalent (PE) data, highest copies/1 PE identified for blaKPC blaOXA-48, agreeing previous studies regarding isolates. Both non-hospital-type followed a similar temporal trend incidence, but differences groups. Colder seasons favored presence whereas warmer temperatures show increased blaVIM blaIMP. IMPORTANCE Wastewater-based epidemiology has recently been recognized valuable, cost-effective tool antimicrobial surveillance. It can help gain insights characteristics antibiotic elements at local, national, global scale. In this study, we use surveillance clinically relevant (CRGs), seen critical determinants. matter, our results highlight positive correlations CRGs, diversity, physical chemical parameters. Identified provide valuable data level raw treated contamination these important genes. wastewater-based used first time observe trends incidence general population. Therefore, hot spots carbapenem could be easily level, surpassing limitations health care-associated settings.
