In a freshwater aquifer, microorganisms colonize basalt nucleate nonstoichiometric on cell walls. the laboratory, ordered formed near-equilibrium conditions with molar Mg:Ca ratios <1; was absent sterile Geochemical microbiological data that methanogens are dominant metabolic guild system integral precipitation. hypothesize attached consortium reacts surface, releasing Mg Ca into solution, which drives via nucleation wall. These findings provide insight long-standing problem fundamental role processes formation across wide range environmental conditions.
