ABSTRACT
PURPOSE: To assess the depth of infiltration rectal cancer with transrectal ultrasound (US) (TRUS) and analyze interpretation errors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-five consecutive patients who underwent TRUS were prospectively studied. The effect different patient inclusion criteria US was evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: Extensive overstaging T2 tumors, partially caused by inflammatory (desmoplastic) reaction or retraction muscularis propria, resulted in a specificity only 24% for detection perirectal infiltration. Sensitivity 97%, accuracy 64%. Considerable variation staging observed when selection used. Variation improved differentiation between T3 tumors slightly. CONCLUSION: on is limited. Spontaneous iatrogenic inflammation major limiting factor. affected criteria.
