Is Wikipedia a reliable learning resource for medical students? Evaluating respiratory topics

ABSTRACT
The aim of the present study was to critically evaluate accuracy and readability English Wikipedia articles on respiratory system its disorders whether they can be a suitable resource for medical students. On April 27, 2014, searched topics. Using modified DISCERN instrument, were independently scored by three assessors. scoring targeted content accuracy, frequency updating, quality references. measured using two other instruments. mean score 40 identified 26.4 ± 6.3. Most covered causes, signs symptoms, prevention, treatment. However, several knowledge deficiencies in pathogenesis diseases, investigations needed, treatment observed. total number references 1,654, varied from 0 168 references, but problems list citations made. range 9.4 1.8 22.6 10.7 Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level instrument 10.0 2.6 19.6 8.3 Readability Coleman-Liau index. A strong correlation found between instruments ( r 2 = 0.744, P < 0.001). agreement assessors had κ scores 0.712–0.857. In conclusion, despite effort placed creating anonymous volunteers (wikipedians), most deficiencies, not accurate, students as learning resources.
