ABSTRACT
Emerging evidence has implicated reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although intestinal epithelial cells produce ROS-neutralizing enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), protein and activity levels copper/zinc (Cu/Zn) manganese (Mn) SOD are perturbed inflamed tissues IBD patients. Thus we investigated ability MnSOD from Streptococcus thermophilus to reduce colitis symptoms interleukin (IL) 10-deficient mice using Lactobacillus gasseri as a delivery vehicle. Cohorts 13-15 IL-10-deficient were left untreated or supplemented with native L. expressing for 4 wk. Colonic tissue was collected inflammation histologically scored. The presence innate immune by immunohistochemistry host antioxidant response determined quantitative PCR. It demonstrated that stably maintained at least 3 days. producing significantly reduced compared controls (P < 0.05), whereas anti-inflammatory effects both more pronounced males. associated reduction infiltration neutrophils macrophages. Transcripts genes equivalent colonic obtained control probiotic-treated mice. This study demonstrates significant reduces severity mouse.
