ABSTRACT
The loss of sarcomeres in series with age contributes to declining muscle performance. The present study investigated whether eccentric training could improve performance via serial sarcomere addition in old muscle, like in young muscle. Four weeks of maximal eccentric training induced serial sarcomere addition in the young rat plantar flexors and improved in vivo performance, however, led to dysfunctional remodeling accompanied by further impaired performance in old rats.
