Study physicians assigned subtypes. Extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis was associated 8.0% while extracranial ICA occlusion intracranial each 3.5% strokes. The annual rate attributed 13.4 (11.4–15.4) per 100,000 persons. conservatively estimate 41,000 may be annually United States. Conclusions: Large-vessel is an important cause stroke, being significantly more common than atherosclerotic
