ABSTRACT
Endothelial dysfunction may play a pathophysiological role in the development of atherosclerosis subjects with type 1 diabetes. We examined whether alterations vascular endothelial function exist children diabetes and tested hypothesis that is associated early structural atherosclerotic changes these children.Noninvasive ultrasound was used to measure brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) responses carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) 75 (mean age 11+/-2 years), 45 (diabetes duration 4.4+/-2.9 years) 30 healthy control children. Children had lower peak FMD response (4.4+/-3.4% versus 8.7+/-3.6%, P<0.001) increased IMT (P<0.001) compared controls. Sixteen (36%) defined as total lowest decile for normal These (0.58+/-0.05 0.54+/-0.04 mm, P=0.01) higher LDL cholesterol concentration (2.63+/-0.76 2.16+/-0.60 mmol/L, P=0.03) diabetic without dysfunction. Multivariate correlates included group (P=0.03), low high (P=0.08).Impaired common manifestation IMT. data suggest predispose them atherosclerosis.
