ABSTRACT
Imaging by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques has been shown to provide high-contrast resolution between soft tissues and characterization of normal pathologic differences in relaxation times. The current study was designed determine whether electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated NMR imaging the canine heart vivo could distinguish from infarcted myocardium without use intravenous paramagnetic contrast agents. Seven dogs were studied ECG-gated (spin-echo technique) with a 0.35 Tesla superconducting magnet at 2 7 days after ligation left anterior descending coronary artery. In six seven dogs, signal intensity increased wall compared remainder ventricle; this region high corresponded area myocardial infarction demonstrated postmortem examination. 66 +/- 27% greater than that (p less .01). T2 (spin-spin) time 69 3% longer as images seventh dog had uniform throughout ventricle. An infarct not evident on examination dog. Thus gated spin-echo technique displays acute infarctions regions media. is characterized prolonged time.
