ABSTRACT
Background and Purpose— Statins may be beneficial for patients with acute ischemic stroke. We tested the hypothesis that pretreated statins at onset of stroke have less severe neurological effects a better outcome. Methods— prospectively included consecutive <24-hour duration. recorded demographic data, vascular risk factors, Oxfordshire Classification, National Institutes Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, admission blood glucose body temperature, cause (Trial Org 10172 in Acute Treatment [TOAST] criteria), progression day 3, previous statin treatment, outcome 3 months. analyzed data using univariate methods logistic regression dependent variable good (modified Rankin [mRS] 0 to 1, Barthel Index [BI] 95 100). Results— 167 (mean age 70.7±12 years, 94 men). Thirty (18%) were when admitted. In group, median NIHSS score was not significantly lower reduced. Favorable outcomes months more frequent group (80% versus 61.3%, P =0.059 mRS; 76.7% 51.8%, =0.015 BI). Predictors favorable BI were: (OR: 0.72; CI: 0.65 0.80; <0.0001), 0.96; 0.92 0.99; =0.017), 5.55; 1.42 17.8; =0.012). Conclusions— provide benefits long-term functional administered before cerebral ischemia. However, randomized controlled trials will required evaluate validity our results.
