ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate the effects of melatonin on healing colon anastomosis following chemotherapy.32 rats were randomised into four groups: (a) control group, which underwent sigmoid transection and primary anastomosis; (b) received daily (c) 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) 5-FU for five days prior (d) 5-FU+melatonin anastomosis. The sacrificed Postoperative Day 7 anastomotic bursting pressures measured. segment was extracted hydroxyproline, luminol lucigenin measurement histopathological examination. Blood samples obtained from vena cava tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) plasma levels.Compared hydroxyproline levels significantly higher, while lower, in groups. In addition, TNF-α IL-1β lower groups than group. Histopathological examination showed a significant decrease inflammation formation group when compared positive effect also seen that 5-FU.Our results adverse chemotherapy mechanical, biochemical parameters attenuated through treatment.
