Exploration of non-pharmacological interventions in the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are considered integral parts dementia. While pharmacotherapy is reserved for severe BPSD, the associated adverse effects can be detrimental. Therefore, non-pharmacological intervention recommended as first line treatment in management BPSD. This study aimed to explore approaches BPSD strategies barriers implementing them secondary care facilities Malaysia. Methods: A qualitative design was employed. Data were collected through observations semi-structured interviews 12 caregivers 11 people with (PWD) at seven facilities. Observations written field notes, audio-recorded transcribed. All data subjected thematic analysis. Results: Some personalised interventions, such physical exercise, music therapy, reminiscence therapy pet conducted several nursing centres. Collaborative from providers family members found an important facilitating factor. The lack support led carrying additional workload beyond their job scope. Other interventions cultural language differences between PWD, inadequate staff numbers training, time constraints. Conclusion: Although have been used some extent Malaysia, continuous education training healthcare PWD needed overcome challenges successful implementation.
