ABSTRACT
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a risk factor for cardiovascular death in middle-aged subjects, but it not known whether also the elderly. To investigate OSA and to assess continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment associated with change elderly.Prospective, observational study of consecutive cohort elderly patients (≥65 yr) studied suspicion between 1998 2007. Patients an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) less than 15 were control group. was defined as mild moderate (AHI, 15-29) or severe ≥30). classified CPAP-treated (adherence ≥ 4 h/d) untreated < h/d prescribed). Participants monitored until December 2009. The end point death. A multivariate Cox survival analysis used determine independent impact CPAP on mortality.A total 939 (median follow-up, 69 mo). Compared group, fully adjusted hazard ratios mortality 2.25 (confidence interval [CI], 1.41 3.61) 0.93 (CI, 0.46 1.89) 1.38 0.73 2.64) group.Severe treated elderly, adequate may reduce this risk.
