ABSTRACT
A catalogue is presented of plant names in use the Caatinga Phytogeographical Domain (CPD), largest semiarid ecoregion South America. We compiled all pubished papers we could locate with floristic and/or phytosociological data relating to CPD and created a database site-based surveys, reported these surveys basic ecological associated each species. then mapped used survey reports those currently accepted Brazil, consulting specialists resolve taxonomic nomenclatural issues before synthesizing order present here list use. Thus this compilation represents by generalist botanists on sub continental scale. Synthesizing previously dispersed available for species, explored general patterns CPD. also classified as documenting flora specific type environment within compared resemblance between different environments biogeographical Rarefaction curves species richness estimator indices were employed address question whether or not can be described well-sampled. To date over 1700 have been studies Most focused only woody plants, ignoring non component, but show that large proportion biodiversity comprised plants. estimate 40% existing sampled surveys. Moreover, most our recorded from single site, while few considered widespread. When comparing number widespread dataset results published cerrado savannas, seems much more restricted distribution than plants Cerrado. discuss sampling geographical related study Caatinga.
