ABSTRACT
Hypostomus krikati sp. n. is described from the Mearim River basin, state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. This new species shares all diagnostic features defining plecostomus super-group. Three H. super-group are geographically close to here (Hypostomus jaguribensis, pusarum and papariae). easily distinguised them by having conspicuous keels along lateral series plates. There other that do not belong (H. johnii, velhomonge velhochico). differs these a lower number teeth, plates, abdominal region totally covered dark spots horizontally aligned large-sized adults. The recently for Maranhão hydrographic systems, as well reinforce hypothesis systems may present high level endemism freshwater fishes.
