ABSTRACT
Abstract Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) with polarimetric radar measurements suffers from different sources of uncertainty. The variational approach appears to be a promising way optimize the QPE statistically. In this study is developed quantitatively estimate rainfall rate ( R ) differential phase (Φ DP ). A spline filter utilized in optimization procedures eliminate impact random errors Φ , which can major source error specific K )-based QPE. addition, estimated horizontal reflectivity factor Z H used priori covariance matrix statistically determined. evaluated by an idealized case and multiple real cases observed operational S-band southern China. comparative results demonstrate that proper range filter, proposed included agrees well rain gauge proves have better performance than other three approaches, is, without included, Hogan, conventional power-law estimator-based approach.
