Goals should be defined as CLEVER before specifying them into SMART goals: A phenomenological hermeneutical study to facilitate the implementation of goal-oriented care in primary care

ABSTRACT
Background: Goal-oriented care is prominent in primary settings due to the rising number of people living with (multiple) chronic conditions. Before goal-oriented can be fully implemented, a better understanding about concept goals needs gained. This study aimed elicit in-depth knowledge through narratives conditions regarding their view on goal setting. Method: In qualitative research design within phenomenological–hermeneutical paradigm, 15 interviews were performed (mean age 65; 38–81) based homogeneous sampling strategy. Results: revealed that setting starts from talking everyday activities embedded real-life context. A well-defined should consist context, life narrative patient, engagement towards particular goal, reason why this important terms underlying values, emotions going along activity, and relevance for patient. leads CLEVER goals. Conclusion: These findings prompt reconsideration traditional healthcare, which typically adheres SMART. Based participants’ experiences, defined as first before they transposed into SMART
