ABSTRACT
When the first carpometacarpal joint of wrist is immobilized using an orthosis to combat effects osteoarthritis, atrophy thenar muscles may occur.The aim this study was evaluate muscle diameter and cross-sectional area, function, pain, before after being supplied with in patients grades 1 2 osteoarthritis compared a control group.Randomized clinical trial.A total 25 volunteer were randomized into two groups (an group group) randomization table. A visual analog scale, Michigan Hand Questionnaire, ultrasound used measure specific areas at baseline 4 weeks both groups.Mean scale pain scores decreased by 20% splinting, while those 3%. Changes significantly different between ( p = 0.001). There no significant difference either Questionnaire score or area.A large effect on perceived observed splint use. Differences treatment found regard areas, but these not significant. Clinical relevance Custom-made splints be recommended for osteoarthritis. Moderate non-significant areas.
