Cytokine Adsorption in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients, a Case-Control Study

Aim: New coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become an international emergency. As many of the intensive care unit (ICU) patients with also present multiple organ failure, blood purification techniques might be a good choice in their treatment. In this study we aimed to investigate role cytokine removal COVID-19 managed ICUs. Methods: For case-control have investigated by means two resin membranes (HA330 and Mediasorb) Particularly, overtime variation clinical severity scores, laboratory variables, effects on hospital ICU stay mortality. Results: Seventy-two been evaluated, which half constituted Cytokine Filtration (CF) Group, other Case-Control (CC) Group. Mortality was 55.6% 50% CF CC groups, respectively. there decrease C-reactive protein (CRP) fibrinogen levels measured at end adsorption; lymphocyte count ratio were increased, whereas neutrophile decreased. There no differences between groups regarding SOFA scores vasopressor uses. Conclusions: We demonstrated CRP, increase having adsorption, but reflection these benefits, mortality as well. Even though is physio-pathologic rationale use adsorption for immunomodulation critically ill patients, it early make strong suggestions about benefits.
