Patients’ Perspectives on Approaches to Facilitate Completion of Advance Directives

ABSTRACT
Little is understood about the different ways patients complete advance directives (ADs), which most commonly through lawyers and increasingly using websites.To understand patients' perspectives on approaches to facilitating AD completion, value of legal regulation ADs, use a web-based platform create an AD.Semi-structured interviews with patients.We purposively sampled 25 at least 70 years age or chronic disease from 2 internal medicine clinics.Interviews focused experiences creating including facilitation by lawyers, health-care professionals, websites. Feedback website prototype was also obtained. Responses were analyzed modified grounded theory until thematic saturation achieved.Although majority participants ADs had used ambivalent benefits lawyer facilitation. Most valued both medical perspective professional lawyer's attention requirements for validity. Participants positive impressions web platform, but some concerned privacy online storage. Trust emerged as overarching theme, ensure document authenticity delivery preference-concordant care.Efforts improve documentation care planning need address disparate methods ADs. Creating options that combine perceived approach greater health involvement could appeal participants. Privacy concerns may limit patients.
