ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Patients on haemodialysis (HD) are often constipated. This study aimed to assess the relationship between constipation and mortality in such patients. In this study, was defined as receiving prescription laxatives, based investigation results of “a need take laxatives is most common conception constipation” reported by World Gastroenterology Organization Global Guidelines. Methods cohort included 12,217 adult patients HD enrolled Japan-Dialysis Outcomes Practice Patterns phases 1 5 (1998 2015). The participants were grouped into two whether they prescribed during enrolment at baseline. primary endpoint all-cause 3 years, secondary cause-specific death. Missing values imputed using multiple imputation methods. All estimations calculated a Cox proportional hazards model with an inverse probability treatment weighting propensity score. Results Laxatives 30.5% patients, there 1240 deaths. There significant association laxative [adjusted hazard ratio (AHR), 1.12; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03 1.21]. Because Kaplan-Meier curves groups crossed over, we examined 8345 observed for more than 1.5 years. Laxative significantly associated (AHR, 1.35; CI: 1.17 1.55). AHR infectious death 1.62 (95% 1.14 2.29), that cancerous 1.60 1.08 2.36). However, cardiovascular did not show inter-group difference. Conclusions Constipation requiring use increased risk HD. It important prevent from developing reduce number laxatives.
