ABSTRACT
Three billion individuals worldwide rely on biomass fuel [dung, wood, crops] for cooking and heating. Further, health conditions resulting from household air pollution (HAP) are responsible approximately 3.9 million premature deaths each year. Though transition away traditional stoves is projected curb the effects of HAP by mitigating exposure, benefits newer clean cookstove technologies can only be fully realized if use these new exclusive sustained. However, under which adopt sustain cookstoves not well understood. The Enhancing LPG Adoption in Ghana (ELAG) study a cluster-randomized controlled trial employing factorial intervention design. first component behavior change based Risks, Attitudes, Norms, Abilities, Self-regulation (RANAS) model. This seeks to align five behavioral factors with adoption sustained use. A second access-related will improve availability offering direct-delivery refueling service. These two interventions integrated via design whereby 27 communities assigned one following: control arm, educational intervention, delivery, or combined intervention. Intervention allocation determined covariate-constrained randomization approach. After 900 households' individual tracked 12 months iButton stove monitors. Analysis include hierarchical linear models used compare households. Literature to-date demonstrates that recipients improved rarely completely technology. Instead, they often practice partial (fuel stacking). Consequently, needed influence patterns simultaneously understand drivers adoption. Ensuring uptake, adoption, then lead HAP-reductions consequent improvements public health. NCT03352830 (November 24, 2017).
