ABSTRACT
It is widely recognised that complex public health interventions roll out in distinct phases, within which external contextual factors influence implementation. Less known about relationships with identified a priori the pre-implementation phase. We investigated factors, prior to implementation of community-centred approach reducing alcohol harm called 'Communities Charge Alcohol' (CICA), were related one process indicators: numbers Alcohol Health Champions (AHCs) trained.A mixed methods design was used phase CICA. studied ten geographic communities experiencing both high levels deprivation and alcohol-related North West England. Qualitative secondary data extracted from meeting notes, recorded two three months before roll-out. Items coded into 12 content categories using analysis. To create baseline 'infrastructure score', number documented counted per area maximum score 12. Descriptive collected training registers detailing first months. The relationship between infrastructure score, AHCs trained assessed non-parametric univariable statistics. There positive correlation total (Rs = 0.77, p 0.01). Four associated significantly higher lay people recruited trained: having care provider coordinate intervention (p 0.02); pool other volunteers recruit contract place commissioned service 0.02), and; formal volunteer arrangements 0.03).Data suggest there four key components influenced establishing an Champion programme areas harm. There added value capturing then testing indicators inform effective roll-out interventions. Future research could explore wider range outcomes, incorporating rate individual derive mean score.ISRCTN81942890, date registration 12/09/2017.
