Patterns and determinants of care seeking for obstetric complications in rural northwest Bangladesh: analysis from a prospective cohort study

ABSTRACT
In communities with low rates of institutional delivery, little data exist on care-seeking behavior for potentially life-threatening obstetric complications. this analysis, we sought to describe patterns self-reported complications and near misses in rural Bangladesh identify factors associated care seeking these conditions.Utilizing from a community-randomized controlled trial enrolling 42,214 pregnant women between 2007 2011, used multivariable multinomial logistic regression explore the association demographic socioeconomic factors, perceived need, service availability or misses. We also analyze by type complication (eclampsia, sepsis, hemorrhage, obstructed labor).Out 9,576 complications, 77% any care, 29% (n = 2,150) visiting at least one formal provider 70% 5,149) informal providers only. The proportion was highest among reporting eclampsia (57%), followed hemorrhage (28%), labor (22%), sepsis (17%) (p < 0.001). analyses, such as living household wealth quartile (Relative Risk Ratio 1.49; 95% CI [1.33-1.73]), women's literacy (RRR 1.21; [1.05-1.42]), employment 1.10; [1.01-1.18]) were significantly providers.
