Mental health service users’ experiences of psychiatric re-hospitalisation - an explorative focus group study in six European countries

ABSTRACT
Psychiatric re-hospitalisation is considered costly and disruptive to individuals. The perspective of the mental health service user largely unexplored in literature. purpose our study was explore users’ experiences psychiatric across six countries Europe. Eight focus groups were conducted Romania, Slovenia, Finland, Italy, Austria Norway. A total 55 users participated study. All participants had been receipt services for at least 1 year, experienced more than one hospitalisation. experience considered: (1) less traumatising first hospitalisation, (2) be necessary, a relief, (3) occurring by default without progress, (4) part recovery process. inevitable participants, both positive negative terms. Striking similarities found all countries, hospitalisation emerging as especially significant. Findings indicate need further action order develop person-centred approaches within hospital care. For inpatient care process, knowledge on what therapeutic during stay would beneficial, such therapy, activities integration with other services.
