ABSTRACT
Gadolinium (Gd) Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) has been proposed as a non-invasive method for assessment of diffuse myocardial fibrosis. Yet only few studies used 3 T CMR to measure ECV, and the accuracy ECV measurements at not established. Therefore aims present study were validate measurement MOLLI T1 mapping against fibrosis measured histopathology. We also evaluated recently hypothesis that native-T1 without contrast injection would be sufficient detect 31 patients (age = 58 ± 17 years, 77 % men) with either severe aortic stenosis (n 12) regurgitation 9) or mitral 10), all free coronary artery disease, underwent T-CMR late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) pre- post-contrast computation, prior valve surgery. LV biopsies performed time surgery, median 13 [1–30] days later, stained picrosirius red. Pre-, values, amount LGE compared magnitude histopathology Pearson correlation coefficients. The average interstitial red staining in biopsy samples was 6.1 4.3 %. computed from pre-post changes 28.9 5.5 %, correlated (r 0.78, p < 0.001) strongly histological By opposition, neither 0.17, 0.36) nor native pre-contrast −0.18, 0.32) determined images closely correlates histologically fibrosis, providing estimation quantification diseases. non-contrast times indicative
