Demographic, clinical, and paraclinical features of patients operated with the diagnosis of acute descending necrotizing mediastinitis: a retrospective study in Southern Iran

ABSTRACT
Abstract Introduction Descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) is a type of acute that rarely reported but regarded as fatal disease despite improvements in technological methods and antibiotic therapies. We aimed to determine the demographic, clinical, paraclinical features patients diagnosed with DNM. Methods In this retrospective study, patients’ hospital records diagnosis DNM admitted Namazi southern Iran during 18 years (2002–2019) were reviewed. Demographic clinical recorded subsequently analyzed via SPSS 22. Results Out 67 patients, 25 (37.3%) an average age 37.2 ± 16.7 years, 68% male. Regarding etiology, 52.0% due neck infection.
