Knowledge of danger signs in newborns and health seeking practices of mothers and care givers in Enugu state, South-East Nigeria

ABSTRACT
According to UNICEF, 40% of all under-5 deaths occur within the first month life and half these few days life. Many are related late recognition neonatal illness, delays in decision seek care at household level subsequent intervention healthcare facilities. Knowledge mothers about danger signs newborn is imperative reduce preventable deaths.This study aimed assess perception and/or givers newborns their knowledge WHO recognized danger. A secondary aim was explore socio-demographic factors that influence health seeking behaviors care-givers.This a community based descriptive analytical which used multistage sampling technique select 376 care-givers from four communities 4 17 Local Government Areas (LGA) Enugu State. Logistic regression chi-square testing associations between variables.Knowledge more than three nine sign poor (0.0-30.3%). Majority had one (i.e. fever) (95.2%). not significantly associated with maternal variables considered this study. Healthcare behaviour determined by least (OR 4.6 CI 1.1-18.7, P = 0.032). Cough, diarrhea excessive crying were most perceived experienced non-WHO dangers among respondents.There urgent need strengthen teaching training expectant across on appropriate measures take when they occur.
