ABSTRACT
Abstract Background We aimed to determine the effect of sampling time during day on serum periostin levels in adult participants with and without asthma. Methods Serum was measured at 2-h intervals from 0800 1800 h 16 stable asthma prescribed inhaled corticosteroid long-acting beta-agonist therapy, otherwise healthy Mixed linear models were used compare zero (08:00 h) subsequent measurement for both groups. Results In non-asthma, mean (SD) continuously reduced 53.5 (13.6) ng/mL 50.9 (13.4) (difference log −0.05, P ≤ 0.001) 50.5 (13.0) 46.2 (11.5) −0.08, respectively. Conclusions Periostin values are higher morning compared afternoon asthmatic non-asthmatic adults. The small magnitude variation suggests that which measurements made is unlikely influence treatment decisions if a specific level predict responsiveness.
