ABSTRACT
Within an enhanced recovery pathway (ERP), the approach to treating pain should be multifaceted and goal deliver "optimal analgesia," which we define in this paper as a technique that optimizes patient comfort facilitates functional with fewest medication side effects. With input from multi-disciplinary, international group of clinicians, through structured review literature use modified Delphi method, achieved consensus surrounding topic optimal analgesia perioperative period for colorectal surgery patients. As part first Perioperative Quality Improvement (POQI) workgroup meeting, sought develop document describing comprehensive, yet rational practical, developing evidence-based plan achieving analgesia, specifically ERP. The was two-fold: (a) application process would lead improved outcomes (b) investigation questions raised identify knowledge gaps aid direction research into within ERPs years come. This details evidence wide range analgesic components, particular focus preoperative post-anesthesia care unit. overall conclusion is combination techniques employed not important long it effective delivering set forth document.
