ABSTRACT
Bacterial infection, Eustachian tube dysfunction, allergies, and immunologic factors are major causes of otitis media with effusion (OME). However, the exact pathogenesis OME is still unclear. This study evaluated whether allergy influences bacterial growth in middle ear effusions.Fifty-four samples were obtained from patients 3-10 years age who underwent ventilation insertion divided into two groups based on presence as determined using multiple allergosorbent test (MAST). Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis DNA effusions was analyzed polymerase chain reaction. Overall detection rates those for each species compared between groups.Of 54 samples, 38 (70.4 %) contained 14 (36.8 these species. S. pneumoniae detected 27 (50 %), H. influenzae 17 (31.4 M. 9 (16.6 %). There no significant difference MAST-positive MAST-negative groups. The rate bacteria did not differ allergic non-allergic children.
