Abstract Natural yellow plant dyes and traditional medicines were used widely on historical papers in ancient China for religious reasons conservation considerations. This study aims to evaluate some botanical sources of that contain different chemical colorant compositions order understand their effects the properties handmade paper. The physical changes paper specimens treated with studied by examining such as color, pH, thermogravimetric (TG) characteristics, tensile strength, folding endurance microstructure scanning electron microscopy (SEM). results indicated colorants had toning main components, including carboxyl ketone groups, could affect stability at high temperatures. also revealed mechanical improved after treatment dyes. significant improvements strength slightly higher decomposition temperature Amur cork tree -dyed be ascribed strong interaction between colorants’ components fibers. scientific evaluation property is therefore valuable information weighing advantages disadvantages various materials treatment.
