ABSTRACT
Gemstone industry is one of the important Thailand local businesses. However, majority stones are not perfect but with defects or flaws. Glass-filling treatment has been a traditional method to rescue poor stones. Since glass-filled may contain toxic heavy metals, development new gemstone modification techniques necessitated. Ion beams have developed as novel technique modifying gemstones for gemological improvements and also being applied on remove metals. Therefore, before after ion beam modifications should be clarified their metal impurity concentration distribution. In this work, samples glass filled ruby were firstly by irradiated 80 kV accelerated nitrogen ions 1017 ions/cm2 then analyzed using elastic backscattering spectrometry 2 MeV 1.7 proton in Chiang Mai (Thailand) Wuhan (China), respectively. Both elemental distribution materials implantation. The results reveal that dominating stone confirmed lead. atomic lead treated about 0.15% uniform distribution, decreased near 20 times compared as-glass-filled stone, demonstrating effectiveness gemstones.
