ABSTRACT
PURPOSE Long-term evaluation of the combination two needle aspiration techniques (NAT) (fine-needle [FNA] and biopsy [ANB]) in performing an efficient preoperative selection palpable thyroid nodules. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eight years extensive use surgery for detection cancer was compared with 12 by NAT. RESULTS A total 1,140 operations were performed from 1972 to 1979, 35 malignant nodules discovered (3.1%). Five thousand four hundred three patients examined NAT 1980 1992; 483 (9%) underwent 158 excised. The number identified 166 (eight not excised) (3.1% population examined). principal clinical pathologic features similar both groups. ANB yielded a definite benign diagnosis 88 inadequate FNA findings, it correctly diagnosed as FNA, showed macrofollicular component 115 microfollicular nodules, significantly changed predictive value 79 suspicions diagnoses. CONCLUSION Introduction reduced 143 40 per year increased 13 excised without any change overall incidence contributed high patient selection, principally reducing indeterminate or suspicious, well false-negative,
