ABSTRACT
PURPOSE: Total mesorectal excision (TME) surgery in the treatment of rectal cancer has been shown to result a reduction number local recurrences retrospective studies. Reports on improved control after preoperative, hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) have led introduction prospective randomized multicenter trial, which effect TME with or without preoperative RT were evaluated. Any benefit regard reduced recurrence rate and possible survival must be weighed against potential adverse effects both short-term long-term. The present study was undertaken assess acute side short-term, patients influence five doses 5 Gy surgical parameters, postoperative morbidity mortality Dutch trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 1,530 entered onto comparing followed by alone, 1,414 assessable. Toxicity from RT, characteristics, complications compared. RESULTS: during hardly occurred. Irradiated had 100 mL more blood loss operation (P < .001) showed perineal = .008) cases abdominoperineal resection. total slightly increased irradiated group .008). No difference observed (4.0% v 3.3%) reinterventions. CONCLUSION: Preoperative is safe procedure treated surgery, despite slight increase when compared only.
