Shyness and Computer-Mediated Communication: A Self-Presentational Theory Perspective

ABSTRACT
Abstract This study compared shy and nonshy Internet users in online offline contexts on the Revised Cheek Buss Shyness Scale (RCBSS; Cheek, 1983) other measures intended to gauge 4 underlying aspects of shyness: rejection sensitivity, initiating relationships, self-disclosure, providing emotional support advice. University students (N = 134; 76% female) participated a Web-based survey that investigated impact computer-mediated communications (CMC) shyness level. Results show individuals classified as or basis their scores RCBSS context were also significantly different self-disclosure. However, they not these same 3 domains context. The results are interpreted for self-presentation theory account absence visual auditory cues reduces individuals' experience detecting negative inhibitory feedback from others. We discuss positive use CMC by individuals.
