ABSTRACT
Myogenic helix-loop-helix (HLH) proteins, such as myogenin and MyoD, can activate muscle-specific transcription when introduced into a variety of nonmuscle cell types. Whereas cells mesodermal origin are especially permissive to the actions these myogenic regulators, many other types refractory conversion by them. Here we describe novel homeodomain protein, MHox, that binds an A+T-rich element in muscle creatine kinase (MCK) enhancer is essential for trans-activation HLH proteins. MHox completely restricted mesodermally derived during embryogenesis established lines origin. In contrast most homeobox genes, expression excluded from nervous system, with highest levels observed limb bud visceral arches. adult mice, expressed at high skeletal muscle, heart uterus. The DNA-binding properties pattern unique among genes suggest role transcriptional regulator participates establishment diverse
