ABSTRACT
Control of gene expression at the translational level is crucial for many developmental processes. The mRNA cap-binding protein, eIF4E, a key player in regulation translation initiation; appropriate levels eIF4E are essential normal cell-cycle and tissue differentiation. observation that elevated during gametogenesis several organisms suggests might have specific role gamete formation as well. We show one five isoforms C. elegans IFE-1, enriched germline component germ granules (P granules). association IFE-1 with P requires P-granule protein PGL-1. In vitro PGL-1 interacts directly but not other four eIF4E. Analysis animals depleted by RNAi shows required spermatogenesis, specifically efficient progression through meiotic divisions production functional sperm, both hermaphrodites males. requirement highly sensitive to temperature. oogenesis, ife-1(RNAi) produce viable progeny when sperm supplied. Consistent primary ife-1 highest regions gonad undergoing spermatogenesis. Our results suggest spermatogenesis either this isoform or an
