ABSTRACT
To understand how the identity of an organ can be switched, we studied transformation lateral root primordia (LRP) into shoot meristems in Arabidopsis segments. In this system, cytokinin-induced conversion does not involve formation callus-like structures. Detailed analysis showed that sequence starts with a mitotic pause and is concomitant differential expression regulators development. The requires presence apical stem cells, only LRP at stages VI or VII switched. It engaged as soon cell divisions resume because their position orientation differ converting compared undisturbed emerging LRP. By alternating auxin cytokinin treatments, organogenetic programs are remarkably plastic, status same plant niche reversed repeatedly within set developmental window. Thus, networks play meristem morph span couple division cycles those shoot, back, through transdifferentiation.
